Why do you need to enjoy working out?
In order to adhere to an exercise program and stay consistent.
Adherence and consistency are the keys to progress, and you just don’t do things consistently when you don’t enjoy them.
Don’t think it’s true? Then how often do you pull your own teeth out? Probably never. I hope. That’s because it would suck to pull your teeth out.
You see if working out is like pulling teeth, you’re just not going to do it… plain as that.
And if you don’t do it, you can’t reap the benefits, mmm kay?
Now think of something you really enjoy doing. You make time for it. You may even go out of your way to do it.
“But, but, but you CAN’T enjoy working out!”
Then you’re doing it wrong, my friend.
Humans were meant to move, and enjoy doing it while getting tons of benefits.
It’s only recently that we’ve started to dislike moving our bodies. Heck there are even chemicals released to make us feel good after we move for crying out loud!
So how do you enjoy working out?
Experiment and find stuff you enjoy and don’t enjoy (usually the correct answer is the most obvious). Note: It’s also important to pay attention to what you can do given any limitations you may have (i.e. injuries).
As an example, here are some things that I enjoy:
- Complex, multi-joint movements with barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, and body weight.
- Intervals on the treadmill, rower, and gauntlet.
- Running outdoors.
And some things that I don’t enjoy:
- Using strength machines.
- Training the arms (I know weird, right?).
- Running long distances on the treadmill.
I’m so consistent because I do the things that I enjoy, and don’t do the things that I don’t enjoy. Simple.
The best workout is the one that you want to do (and then actually do it!).
And it’s true.
So find something you’ll do.
Get really, really, ridiculously fit.
